New Delhi: Several Opposition leaders have hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech in Rajasthan on Sunday where he alleged that Congress’s manifesto said that it would give away people’s hard-earned wealth to “infiltrators” (read Muslims) and “those who have more children”.
Terming Modi’s election speech in Rajasthan’s Banswara as “hate speech”, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said in a post on X that it was nothing but a “ploy” by Modi to divert people’s attention from his government’s failures.
“Today Modi ji's panic-filled speech showed that INDIA is winning in the first phase results. What Modi ji said is not only a hate speech but also a well thought out ploy to divert attention. Today the Prime Minister did what he has learnt from the values of the Sangh. Lying for power, making baseless references to things and making false accusations on opponents is the specialty of the training of RSS and BJP. “
The Congress president lambasted the Prime Minister for “lying”, saying that “The 140 crore people of the country are no longer going to fall prey to this lie. Our manifesto is for every Indian. It talks about equality for all. It talks about justice for all. The judiciary of the Congress is based on the foundation of truth, but it seems that the throne of the dictator in the form of Goebbels is now shaking. In the history of India, no Prime Minister has lowered the dignity of his post as much as Modiji has.”
The CPI(M)’s X handle, terming Modi’s speech as “desperation of a despot”, urged the Election Commission to “take action against the PM without delay”.
“Shame on you, Mr Modi. You speak the language of communal bigots, inciting hatred, abusing a community to get votes. Your words mark your desperation,” said the Left party’s poster on X.
CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury termed Modi’s “inflammatory” speech as “atrocious”, and the silence of the EC as “more atrocious”
“This is atrocious! The silence of the Election Commission is more atrocious!! Modi’s inflammatory speech is a gross violation of the Moral Code of Conduct & Supreme Court pronouncemnts on Hate Speech. Merits strictest action & contempt of Court”, he wrote on X.
AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi objected to the Prime Minister referring to Muslims as “infiltrators”, and hit back at his regime for distribution of wealth to his “wealthy friends”.
In a post on X, Owaisi wrote: “Modi today called Muslims infiltrators and people with many children. Since 2002 till this day, the only Modi guarantee has been to abuse Muslims and get votes. If one is talking about the country’s wealth, one should know that under Modi’s rule the first right to India’s wealth has been of his wealthy friends. 1% of Indians own 40% of the country’s wealth. Common Hindus are made to fear Muslims while their wealth is being used to enrich others," Owaisi said in a post on X.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi commented on Modi’s “disappointment” after the first phase of voting on April 19, saying it had led to the “level of his lies” falling to a new low to divert public attention.
“After the disappointment in the first phase of voting, the level of Narendra Modi's lies has fallen so much that out of fear, he now wants to divert the attention of the public from the issues. Trends have started coming in regarding the immense support that Congress's 'Revolutionary Manifesto' is receiving. The country will now vote on its issues, vote for its employment, its family and its future. India will not go astray!”, he wrote on X.
There was widespread outrage over the PM’s speech among netizens, too, with some saying they had individually complained to the EC. Some citizens have also started a signature petition addressed to the EC at 4 p.m today lodging a formal complaint against the “hate speech”.
RTI activist Ajoy Bose said he had filed an application with the Eci seeking its reply on what action had been taken by it on the “hate speech” by PM Modi on April 21, 2024, in Banswara, Rajasthan, for violation of the MCC.
