The Assembly elections in Gujarat are scheduled to be held in two phases, on December 1 and 5, the Election Commission has announced. The counting of the votes will be done along with Himachal Pradesh on December 8.

The term of the 182-member state Assembly ends on February 18, 2023. With the announcement of the poll schedule in the state, the Model Code of Conduct will come into effect.

Currently, Bharatiya Janata Party has 111 MLAs in the state, whereas Congress has 62 MLAs. When the elections were held in 2017, Congress had won 77 seats. The vote share of each party was 49% and 42%, respectively. Since then, it has lost 15 MLAs for different reasons.

With the entry of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the fray, the election is likely to be a three-cornered context between the three parties.

The commission informed the media that there are around 4.9 crore eligible voters in Gujarat. Around 51,000 polling stations would be set up, including 34,000 in rural areas, the EC said.

While the elections in Himachal and Gujarat are usually held together, EC had not announced the schedule for Gujarat while announcing poll dates for Himachal Pradesh last month. Himachal Pradesh is set to vote in a single-phase election on November 12.
