Why is Tamil Nadu Opposing Mekedatu Dam in Cauvery Basin?
The government of Tamil Nadu and all the political parties in the state, including the Bharatiya Janata Party, has opposed the proposed Mekedatu project by Karnataka in the Cauvery river. With a very long dispute on Cauvery water sharing between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the project has further escalated tensions between the states. Dr Janakarajan, an environmentalist and also an expert on water management, explains the reason for the apprehension of Tamil Nadu and its strong objection to the project.
