Haryana: Enrolment of Muslims in Higher Education Dips as per AISHE 2020-21

The findings of the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2020-2021 revealed that the enrolment of Muslims in higher education in Haryana has decreased by 18.9%.
The survey found that in 2019-20, there were 12,887 Muslims enrolled in higher education in the state, which decreased to 10,445 in 2020-21. Additionally, Muslims are the only group to see a fall among all social groups.
Moreover, the survey shows that the data of Muslim enrolments for 2020-21 at 10,455 represented just 1% of the total enrolments, which stood at 10.29 lakh in higher education courses. This does not reflect the population share of Muslims in the state, which was around 7% per the 2011 Census.
This isn't the first time that the enrolment of Muslims has decreased. In the period of five years, from 2016-17 to 2020-21, this is the second time it has happened. In 2017-18, the enrolment of Muslims had decreased to 7,607 compared to 8,447 enrolments in the preceding period.
The same pattern is also visible when it comes to teachers in higher education institutions. As per the survey, "out of the 39,256 teachers, there are just 2,644 SCs (6.7%), 46 STs (0.1%), 4,634 OBCs (11.8%) and 709 Muslims (1.8%)."
The state currently has 56 varsities and 1,083 colleges. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education in Haryana for 2020-21 is 31.1. In the case of SCs, it is 22. The GER is calculated as "total enrolment in higher education, regardless of age, expressed as a percentage to the eligible official population in 18-23 years."
The trend concerning women in higher education in Haryana continued for the third consecutive time. In 2020-21, there are more women in higher education in the state when it comes to availing courses in regular mode.
The number of women in higher education courses in regular mode stands at 4.47 lakh. In contrast, there are 4.41 lakh males. This pattern holds for both undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses.
A total of "2,502 women are pursuing PhD against 2,046 men. But among Professors and Associate Professors, there are more men, while among Assistant Professors, there are more women."
