Srinagar: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday carried out search operations in more than a dozen locations in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir in cases related to targeted killings in the region.
According to a statement from the enforcement agency, the raids were conducted in connection to a case that pertains to criminal conspiracy for carrying out "terrorist and subversive activities" by cadres of various militant organisations targeting minorities and security personnel.
An NIA spokesperson said that the searches were carried out in as many as 14 locations across the South Kashmir districts of Kulgam, Pulwama and Anantnag, Sopore in North Kashmir and also in the winter capital of Jammu.
“The case pertains to the criminal conspiracy for carrying out terrorist and subversive activities hatched by the cadres and over-ground workers of various proscribed organisations and their affiliates, off-shoots, operating under various pseudo names, at the behest of their Pakistani commanders/handlers,” a statement from NIA read.
The NIA spokesperson added that the cadres from the militant outfits are involved in carrying out targeted attacks by using cyber-space in Jammu and Kashmir, targeting minorities with security personnel being involved in the spread of alleged communal disharmony.
The raids were part of a criminal case the agency had filed earlier in June this year after targeted killings were carried out against Hindu minorities, non-local residents and several Panchayat members and policemen in the region. Nearly a dozen members of the minority community have been killed recently in these targeted killings believed to be carried out by the Lashkar e Toiba (LeT) militant outfit.
The law enforcement agency also said that during the searches on Friday, various incriminating materials such as digital devices, SIM cards and digital storage devices were also seized from the premises where raids were carried out.
Militancy in Jammu and Kashmir has been hit hard with increasing counter-insurgency operations and crackdown against militant networks. This year as many as 185 militants have been killed- many of them fresh recruits. Security measures were heightened after as many as 30 persons were killed in various militant attacks.
