West Bengal: ‘Black Day’ Observed Across State on Babri Demolition Anniversary
Kolkata: The ‘Black Day of Indian Democracy, the 41st anniversary of the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, by Hindutva forces, was observed across West Bengal on Wednesday. The day saw a plethora of programmes highlighting the need for communal harmony in the country. These included a marathon run, blood donation camps, street corner meetings, mohalla rallies among others by the Left parties.
Marking the ‘Black Day’ in Siliguri town, a huge rally was taken out which started from Bagha Jatin Park and ended at Airview. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) Darjeeling district secretary, Saman Pathak, party leader and former mayor Ashok Bhattacharya, and other leaders took part in the rally and highlighted the ‘corporate-communalism nexus’ that is plaguing the country. The rallyists took a pledge to preserve national integrity and communal harmony throughout the country.
Programmes were also organised in Jalpaiguri, Malbazaar , Alipurduar, Engrejbazaar of Malda district in North Bengal .
Despite inclement weather, people came out in large numbers in Burdwan, Bankura, Purulia, Birbhum and Murshidabad districts.
In East Medinipur district, December 6 was observed as ‘Communal Harmony Day’ and an anti-communal rally was taken out across the town.
In South 24 Parganas district, at the call of district Centre of India Trade Unions (CITU) more than 51 persons participated in the blood donation camp.
At the call of Durgapur Steel Employees Union, a half marathon ‘Run for Harmony’ was held, which saw the participation of young and famous sportspersons. They also took oath to preserve communal harmony in the country.
In Birbhum district, the day was observed as a ‘protest day, with rallies and protest meetings held at Siuri, Karidhya , Dubrajpur and Chinpai of the district. A big rally was also taken out at Bakreswar.
In Purulia district the day was observed as ‘Harmony Day’. The central programme was held before the BR Ambedkar statue, demanding exemplary punishment to perpetrators of the crime of demolishing the Babri Masjid.
