Trump Dumps Paris Climate Deal: What Next?
President Trump’s withdrawal of the USA from the Paris Climate Agreement was expected. This is a logical conclusion of his pre-election promises and also a legacy of US intransigence on global climate policy since the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. D Raghunandan from the Delhi Science Forum (DSF) argues that despite a weak US commitment to the Paris Accord, the act of withdrawal by the world’s largest historical emitter of green house gases will have severe implications for island nations and the developing world. Raghunandan reiterates that India's cause will be better served by forging alliances with the developing world, rather than the current approach of kowtowing to the USA.
