Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday announced a Pongal cash gift of Rs 1,000 each to cardholders drawing rice from PDS outlets across the state.

The talks between Transport Minister SS Sivasankar and transport corporation trade unions including LPF, CITU and ATP ended inconclusive on Friday with the unions sticking to their indefinite strike plan from January 9.

A sessions court in Tamil Nadu extended the remand of DMK leader and Minister V Senthil Balaji until January 11. The Enforcement Directorate arrested Balaji on June 14, 2023, in connection with a money laundering case.

The Tamil Nadu government on Friday revoked the charges under the Goondas Act on farmer Arul Arumugam. Arumugam, a former techie and leader of the Uzhavar Urimai Iyakkam (Farmers’ Rights Union), was one among the 20 farmers who the government arrested for protesting the land acquisition for the expansion of the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) project near Cheyyar in the Tiruvannamalai district.

The residents of Ennore and the surrounding 32 villages on the outskirts of Chennai have been struggling to breathe for the past few days. The ammonia gas leak from Coromandel International Limited (CIL) on December 26 left the people gasping for oxygen, leading to the evacuation of thousands of people. Read more

‘GIVE FUNDS FOR FLOOD RELIEF’

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) held a protest outside the Shastri Bhavan in Chennai on Friday. They condemned the Union BJP government for not providing adequate relief funds to Tamil Nadu, many districts were severely affected by the unprecedented rains and floods.

Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin on Thursday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. He urged the prime minister for the immediate release of funds to undertake relief, restoration and rehabilitation works in flood-affected districts.

Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday announced that a delegation of all-party MPs from Tamil Nadu will meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah to reiterate the state government’s demand for Rs. 37,907.19 crore towards restoration works.

‘CREATE TAMIL NADU BANK’

On Friday, cooperative bank employees staged dharna protests in front of district central cooperative banks across the state demanding the formation of ‘Tamil Nadu Bank’. They said that the 23 central cooperative banks in the districts should be merged to form ‘Tamil Nadu Bank.’

They also demanded that all cooperative bank employees receive a 20% salary hike.
