Telangana Elections: Congress Headed Towards Victory; KCR Concedes Defeat

New Delhi: Amid the election trends showing a setback for the Congress in three Hindi belt states -- Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, the party had some reason to cheer for in the South, as it inched towards victory in Telangana.
Till 6.45 pm, the Congress was ahead in 64 seats in the 119-member Assembly, with the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) ahead in 39 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also improved its tally from one in the previous Assembly to eight in these elections, while the AIMIM was leading in seven seats and the CPI in one.
The Congress, led by its state president Revanth Reddy, 54, who joined the party from the Telugu Desam Party in 2017, managed to dethrone the mighty KCR, who has been in power since 2014.
Addressing a press conference, Reddy, said that the national party's responsibility had increased after the results. "On December 3 2023, four crore Telangana people gave a verdict. Now democracy has been strengthened," he said.
With Telangana set to go in Congress hands, and the party winning Karnataka this year, it now has two out of five Southern state governments in its fold. However, it has lost two key governments in the Hindi heartland – Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.
Swearing-in Ceremony on December 4 or 9
The Telangana police on Sunday said it has been asked by Reddy to make security arrangements for the swearing-in ceremony on December 4 or 9.
Reddy has asked state Director General of Police (DGP) Anjani Kumar to make security arrangements for the swearing-in ceremony.
Reddy called and discussed with DGP, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) and ADG CID about the preparation for the swearing-in ceremony, which is likely to be held either on Monday or on December 9, a release from Telangana Police said.
Reddy also told them that his party would soon meet the Governor and discuss government formation.
"The TPCC President mentioned that from today evening Muhurtam (auspicious time) will start. So, if possible, they may consider swearing-in function tomorrow (Dec 4) or they may take (oath) on December 9," it said.
Reddy informed the DGP that several chief ministers, former chief ministers besides senior leaders from Delhi would participate in the swearing-in ceremony.
The event will be held at LB Stadium.
