A Delhi court on Monday granted bail to former Congress councillor Ishrat Jahan in a case about the large conspiracy in the 2020 Delhi riots. Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat granted bail to Jahan.

Jahan has been in custody in this case since February 26, 2020. She was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) "for her alleged involvement in the Northeast Delhi riots of 2020, in which 53 people were killed, and over 700 were injured. She was the Congress councillor from 2012-17 and was a member of the All India Congress Committee."

Advocate Pradeep Teotia, appearing on Jahan's behalf, had argued that no evidence could be furnished to show her involvement in the Delhi riots larger conspiracy case, and she has been falsely implicated.

"They have created fear amongst people. She has been a lawyer. She was a young political person. She has brilliant acumen. I was victorious from a ward where Muslims were less in number. Both the sects had given the vote to her. No Muslim had even won from the said ward," Teotia argued in court.

This is the first instance that an accused in this case has been granted bail by a sessions court. There are, in total, 18 people who have been named accused. Prior to Jahan's bail, five others who received bail had to go to the Delhi High Court to get relief.

Meanwhile, orders on bail pleas of Sharjeel Imam and Saleem Khan have been deferred to March 22, while Umar Khalid's bail plea has been deferred to March 21.
