Need for a Different Model to Develop New Drugs
Dr Venkatraman Ramakrishnan who won a Nobel Prize in 2009 for Chemistry, in conversation with Prabir Purkayastha, exhorts that a different kind of model needs to be created for developing new drugs. He says the governments,the international health organizations etc., could fund the development of these drugs and then they can be licensed to a variety of companies rather than have one proprietary product. Such an alternative model will also help in addressing the issue of expensive costs of these new medicines.
