Nagaland: State Human Rights Commission Probes Alleged Assault on College Student by Police Personnel
New Delhi: The Nagaland State Human Rights Commission (NSHRC) has launched an inquiry into the reported assault of a 19-year-old college student, Moalong Jamir, allegedly by members of the Anti-Vehicle Theft Squad (AVTS) of the Nagaland Police. The incident, which occurred on January 29 in New Showba village, Sovima, under the Chomoukedima district, has sparked outrage and condemnation from various quarters.
According to East Mojo and Northeast Now, expressing deep concern, the NSHRC has directed the Director-General of Police to submit a detailed report within one week regarding the incident. This move comes in the wake of escalating demands for justice and accountability.
According to reports, Moalong Jamir, a second-semester BA student at Tetso College, suffered severe injuries, including damage to his left eardrum, a fractured spinal cord, and a swollen kidney, as a result of the alleged assault.
In response to the incident, various student bodies, including the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and the All Nagaland College Students Union, have vehemently condemned the assault and demanded swift action against the perpetrators.
The NSF has demanded the immediate suspension of the police personnel involved, stressing that failure to do so within three days would lead them to pursue alternative measures to ensure justice for the victim and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The All Nagaland College Students Union has echoed similar sentiments, urging the Nagaland Police to conduct a prompt investigation and take appropriate action against those responsible for the assault.
Meanwhile, the NSHRC has reiterated its commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring accountability for any violations. The Commission has been actively pursuing various cases, including custodial deaths, and has conducted visits to institutions and facilities across the state to assess the human rights situation.
The Nagaland community remains vigilant, demanding justice for Moalong Jamir and accountability for the alleged perpetrators of this egregious act of violence.
