Media Orgs Write to President for Constitutional Freedom Protection Amidst Growing Challenges
New Delhi: The Press Club of India, Indian Women Press Corps, Press Association, Delhi Union of Journalists, Kerala Union of Working Journalists, Digipub, Foreign Correspondent Club, Veteran Journalist Group and All India Lawyers Union have written to the President of India, Draupadi Murmu. They have sought the intervention of The President as the highest constitutional authority to ensure our Constitution's freedoms are protected, including freedom of speech, the freedom to profess occupation and livelihood.
The organisations have drawn attention to the “unprecedented situation faced by the independent media in India today.” They believe that the majority of journalists and professionals engaged in journalism face precarious working conditions as it is. On top of it, the use of draconian laws against journalists has gone up exponentially. They have also highlighted that under such draconian laws, authorities are using their ‘unfettered right to seize equipment’ such as laptops, hard disks and mobile phones- the source of livelihood of the community. These laws also do not provide for bail where ‘incarceration is the norm and not the exception.’
