March in Delhi to Oppose Atrocities Against Dalits

On December 20, people from all over the country are going to march from Madi House to Parliament Street, Delhi, under the banner of Dalit Shoshan Mukti Manch (DSMM), with the slogan “Save constitution, save Dalit rights.” This march is being organised in protest against the atrocities that are being faced by Dalits all over the country. Talking to Newsclick, Ramchandra Dome, general secretary of DSMM said, “We will march in protest of the casteist and communal oppression faced by Dalits all over India.”
In recent times, especially the last four and a half years of the Modi government, the atrocities and oppression faced by the Dalits have seen a steep incline. The amount of caste-based violence has also increased. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 40,774 cases were registered in the year 2016 under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and other sections of law over alleged crimes against SCs and STs. The conviction rate in cases of alleged crimes against STs, the conviction rate was 20.8 per cent, and in case of SCs, the conviction rate was 27.2 per cent.
At this crucial time, while the ruling party is spreading its communal propaganda, and turning a blind eye to the atrocities being faced by the oppressed castes, the DSMM has given the call for this protest march in an attempt to save democracy, secularism, and the constitution. They are also demanding that the allegedly false cases that had been registered against the protesters who participated in the country-wide protests on April 2, 2018, be taken back.

In a Facebook post, DSMM said that this march will create enough pressure on the Central and state governments to make them stop turning the blind eye to the issues faced by the oppressed castes. The preparations are going on for the protest march that will start at 11 am on Friday, December 20, from Mandi House. “If we do not raise a strong voice against the increasing attacks on Dalits, now, the situation will get even worse in near future,” said DSMM.
