Newsclick spoke to Jagmati Sangwan, AIDWA, on the history of International Women’s Day. Women's Day was first observed on February 28, 1909, in New York. It was organized by the Socialist Party of America. An International Women's Conference was organized In August 1910, to precede the general meeting of the Socialist Second International in Copenhagen, Denmark. Jagmati talks about how neo liberal policies have pushed more women into the informal sector. She also talks about how women’s movements should be interlinked with progressive politics.
