The Curious Case of J&K Government Formation!

Newsclick interviewed writer-activist Gautam Navlakha, on the political situation in J &K and Indo-Pak relations. Gautam explained that initially, the motive behind the formation of BJP-PDP government in 2015 was to prepare Mehbooba Mufti as successor to Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. He stated that it is Mehbooba, who is taking time so that a negotiation with BJP can be reached on certain issues. According to Gautam, the promises made by the PDP have been nullified on the ground as they have not been able to deliver anything to the masses and it was the BJP who was dictating the ministries in this coalition. This has led to a fall in the popularity of the PDP, which can be ascertained by the fact the funeral procession of Sayeed saw a meager attendance. About democratic rights of citizens in Kashmir, Gautam emphasised that it is not only Kashmir, but Jammu and Kashmir, which is suffering due to the negligence of the Governments. He points out that a democratic discussion with all sections of the society needs to be taken up, to ensure bilateral relations with Pakistan.
