Come April 1, the Narendra Modi government is offering cheaper LED television sets, mobile phones, digital cameras and some electrical goods, while the prices of essentials are spiralling up. Cooking gas and oil prices are skyrocketing, staples like wheat, rice, pulses, vegetables and medicines are becoming costlier, straining even middle class budgets. This in a country which has slipped six notches in the Global Hunger Index in 2022, ranking 107 out of 121 countries. And where the top 10% have cornered 56% of the national income, concentrated in the hands of a few corporate business groups!
