UP: Assembly Adjourned After SP Uproar Over Manipur on First Day of Monsoon Session

Lucknow: Demanding a statement by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on the Manipur violence, where his party, the BJP, is running the state government, the opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) moved an adjournment motion on the first day of the monsoon session, which was rejected by the Speaker.

Making clear its intentions of not leaving any opportunity to corner the State government on every possible issue during the five-day long session, SP legislators stormed into the well of the House, raising slogans, after Speaker Satish Mahana rejected the adjournment motion moved by the Opposition seeking discussion on the Manipur violence on technical grounds.

Speaking on the first day of the monsoon session, SP supremo Akhilesh Yadav demanded that the Chief Minister make a statement in the legislative Assembly on the situation in Manipur. 

"There is no place left on earth where the Manipur incident has not been criticised whether it is America or Europe," Yadav said.

However, Speaker Mahana interjected, saying it is not an issue for the Vidhan Sabha. 'What has happened is very unfortunate, but this is not the forum,” he added.

"If there's a discussion on Manipur, we'll have to discuss Kerala and West Bengal as well," the Speaker said, adding that there would be no discussion regarding other states and the House will function according to rules.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath chose to remain silent.

Opposition Protest Over Price Rise, Crime

Ahead of monsoon session, SP legislators sat on a dharna in front of the Chaudhary Charan Singh statue at the Uttar Pradesh assembly, raising the issue of price rise, inflation, unemployment, increasing crime rate and job reservation for other backward classes, Scheduled castes and Scheduled tribes in the private sector.

The SP MLAs were seen carrying placards highlighting these issues. A few were even seen wearing garlands made of tomatoes to protest the spiralling prices of essential commodities.

Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) MLAs too joined the SP legislators in their protest. They highlighted issues related to farmers. The SP and RLD had together fought the 2022 assembly polls.

During the five-day session, the government is slated to table a dozen Ordinances, mostly related to approval of new private universities. The government could also bring its first supplementary budget in this session to meet additional financial commitments.
