After Firing 3% Staff, Zomato to Hire 800 People, Says ‘Work-Life Balance Won’t Work’

New Delhi: At a time when major tech companies are on a firing spree, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal posted about around 800 vacancies in the food delivery organisation.

Sharing the news on LinkedIn, Goyal said that Zomato would hire across five positions - chief of staff to CEO, product owner, growth manager, generalist, and software development engineer.

Ironically, the hiring call by Goyal comes weeks after the company had laid off 3% of its employees.

When a user questioned Goyal about "surety against layoffs", Goyal replied that "There never is". Others were more concerned about the expectations from the chief of staff to one of the CEOs (Zomato, Blinkit, Hyperpure)." It is a 24*7 job where the traditional employee mindset of work-life balance won't work," the job posting read.

"As the Chief of Staff to one of our CEOs (Zomato, Blinklt, Hyperpure), you will be nothing less than a force multiplier and a mini-CEO for the organisation. You will drive large priorities across the organisation to influence outcomes and maintain momentum," Goyal noted in the post. "This is a 24×7 job, and the traditional employee mindset of "work-life balance" won't work," the Zomato founder noted in the post.

Various users pointed out the "toxic" and "exploitative" nature of the work environments required in the job posting. Requiring staff to forget about their work-life balance is exploitative. 

The LinkedIn post further asked people to contact him via email to receive more information about the job profiles.

Notably, the 2022 layoffs were not the first time Zomato had let go of people. A similar thing happened during the pandemic when the company fired 500+ people to manage economic losses during COVID.
