Sri Lankans elected Gotabaya Rajapaksa as their president in the aftermath of the deadly Easter Sunday blasts. In doing so, they turned to a man who was widely accused of being ruthless and autocratic. The result has been two years of whimsical economic policies, including populist tax-cuts and an overnight switch to organic farming. Now, Sri Lanka is in the midst of its worst economic crisis. It appears to be a price the people are paying for backing an authoritarian rule.
