Protest in Delhi Against Israeli Offensive in Gaza
A broad front protest against Israeli atrocities in Gaza was called for July 17, 2014 by the All India Peace Solidarity Organisation (AIPSO), the Palestinian Solidarity Committee in India and the Indian People in Solidarity with Gaza. The Delhi Police denied permission late at night on July 16th. But thanks to the joint efforts of the organisations involved, a large group of concerned Indian citizens marched to the Israeli Embassy at Aurangzeb Road and held a protest meeting. The meeting expressed solidarity with the Palestinian struggle to lead safe and free lives in their own land.
The speakers included Nilotpal Basu (AIPSO), Sudhakar Reddy (General Secretary, CPI), Mohd. Salim (MP, CPIM), Kavita Krishnan (CPI (ML) Liberation), Abani Roy, (RSP), Dharmendra Varman (Forward Block), Apoorva (Indian People’s Solidarity with Gaza) and Prabir Purkayastha (Palestine Solidarity Committee in India).
All the speakers condemned Israel the aggressor’s continuing disregard for Palestinian lives; the Israeli flouting of international law; and American support for an occupier war mongering state like Israel that commits war crimes with impunity. The speakers emphasised the fact that instead of condemning Israeli crimes in Gaza, the current Indian government is afraid to speak up, given its growing ties with Israel. The speakers and the citizens at the protest demanded an immediate end to all military ties between India and Israel. The Indian people cannot be implicated in the support of a state like Israel that is not only occupying Palestinian land but is bombing homes, hospitals and schools, and killing Palestinian civilians, including children.
