From Jakarta to Buenos Aires: Saurabh Chaudhary Wins Gold at Youth Olympics

Shooter Saurabh Chaudhary won gold in the boys’ 10 metre air pistol event at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Buenos Aires on October 10.
The 16-year-old Chaudhary, who won gold in the men’s 10 metre event at the Asian Games in Jakarta Palembang recently, scored 244.2 points in the final of YOG to beat Sung Yunho of South Korea (236.7 points). Switzerland's Jason Solari earned the bronze medal with a score of 215.6.
Chaudhary’s gold was India's third at the Games. On October 9, weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga and shooter Manu Bhaker picked up the country’s maiden gold medals at YOG. Lalrinnunga, 15, shattered the national record in the men's 62kg category to win the top prize while 16-year-old Bhaker shot 236.5 to finish on top of the podium in the girls’ 10m air pistol event.

With Chaudhary’s gold, India’s total medal haul at the YOG has swelled to six (three gold and three silver — Tushar Mane and Mehuli Ghosh in 10m rifle shooting and Thangjam Tababi Devi in judo (44kg category). That in itself is a substantial rise from what the Indian colts had managed in the last edition — a silver and a bronze — in the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China. In the inaugural edition in Singapore 2010, India managed six silver and two bronze medals.
Meanwhile, at the table tennis venue in Buenos Aires, Archana Girish Kamath overcame Azerbaijan’s Nign Jing 13-11, 8-11, 6-11, 11-3, 6-11, 12-10, 11-7 to enter the girls’ singles semifinal. Kamath will take on China's Yingsha Sun in the final four.
After sealing the extended first game, Jing, a Chinese origin player, fought back, and took a 2-1 lead over Kamath. But the Indian stepped up her game and levelled things at 3-3 before dropping the next game.

With things getting tight, the 18-year-old kept her nerves calm to fight back once again in the match, to win the next two games and seal a memorable victory.
In swimming, Srihari Nataraj could only manage a sixth place finish in the 100m backstroke final.
