Indian football team was completely outplayed by North Korea (DPR Korea) in their Intercontinental Cup match in Ahmedabad on July 13. The Koreans thrashed India 5-2. With the result, India are out of the race for the final in the four-team tournament.

Jong Il Gwan scored twice for Korea, in the 8th and 28th minute, while Sim Hyon Jin struck once in the 16th minute to give Korea a 3-0 lead going into half time. The second half began with India pressing hard. Lallianzuala Chhangte scored for the hosts in the 51st minute and the home side started signs of a fight back. But Koreans soon regrouped and made it 4-1 through a goal by Ri Un Chol. Sunil Chhetri then made it 2-4 but the Koreans maintained their pressure and rounded off the scoring through a Ri Hyong Jin strike in injury time. Korean Long Freekick

78’ Korea have a freekick right at the top of the India box. Central. 30 yards out. Ri Hyong Jin puts his foot through the ball, but it goes wide. By a distance.

Chhetri Does a Bhutia

Chhetri scores a Bhutiaesque knee into the top corner. Back within two, and playing on the counter. Might make something of it if we can keep our heads about us.

Korea Look Menacing

80’ In between those India goals, Korea have had a few chances of their own, and they are looking dangerous when they get in the final third.

Breathtaking Sahal

82’ This may sound as an exaggeration, but everytime Sahal gets the ball, the stadium collectively inhales and forgets to exhale. Seriously. He really has a brilliant touch. And a casual manner that makes it look all the better.

India Let Chance Go

83’ Chhangte passes to Thapa, who coolly steps over and makes a perfectly timed run behind the Korean defence. Chhetri, who collects though gets the pass wrong, too much power on it and the chance is gone.

Question Mark On Stimac?

88’ Korea are eager to get this game done. And they are drawing fouls and making sure they keep the possession. The result knocks India out of the tournament, but I guess results were never the motivation for Igor Stimac at this stage. There will be some questions asked of him, perhaps a little later on.

Indian Corner

89’ India have a corner. Everyone goes up. It’s drizzling in Ahmedabad, in case you’re interested in the weather.

Korea Clear Corner

90’ + 1’ Nothing from the corner. Chhetri tries to flick it to Sahal, but fails. Off the clearance India launch it in again, but no luck.

Four Minutes of Added Time

There will be four minutes of added time. Kiren Rijiju is already looking at his phone. He must be impressed by some things he’s seen today. The stadium for one. It’s a superb venue. Correct size. Good vibe. Puts the fans near the action.

Korea strike Again, 5-2 Up in Stoppage Time

91’ + 2’ Korea have a fifth.A cross from the right, and India are marking no one, Gwan steps over the cross, and an onrushing attacker has a shot. Amrinder saves brilliantly, but unfortunately for him the ball falls to Ri Hyong Jin, who slots home. That’s that. Caps a terrible defensive performance.

Full Time, IND 2-5 PRK

And that’s that. Igor Stimac has had four games now. He has used 28 players. And his team have conceded 12 goals in these four games. They have conceded more than four in two consecutive games in this tournament, and that little stat makes clear where the problems are. India are out of the reckoning to make it to the final, but there is still one game to play. And hey, guess what?! We are going to be debuting our off feed commentary for that one. So, stay tuned. Enjoy what’s left of your Saturday.
