The city of Tirupur in Tamil Nadu is known as 'Banian City' or as the 'knitwear capital of India'. The city accounts for 90% of India's cotton knitwear export and the garment industries here provide jobs to several lakh workers. The export itself crosses thousands of crore rupees every year. But now, the looming economic issues in the country, as well as the twin policies of GST and demonetisation, have sent the banian industry and the livelihood of the related workers into a reeling crisis.
