A CPI(M) worker was slashed to death allegedly by RSS activists late on Monday, in Palloor, Mahe – a district in Puducherry, surrounded by Kerala’s Kannur and Kozhikode districts.
Kannippoyil Babu, 45, former Mahe Corporation councilor was targeted by criminals while he was heading home. He succumbed to lethal injuries on his neck, and his hands were chopped off by the murderers.
The press statement issued by Kannur District Secretariat of the CPI(M) said that the "brutal murder of K. Babu, a former councilor and an active member of the party, by the RSS activists, shows that they (RSS) are in no mood to end the politics of violence, that they have been carrying out".
“One and a half years before, there was murder attempt on Babu. Though we had filed a complaint with Mahe police who come under Puducherry government, they did not take it seriously. Mahe police stood with RSS. This negligence resulted in the murder of Babu,” said P Jayarajan, Kannur district secretary of CPI(M), while addressing the press on Tuesday.
“Besides, there was an RSS camp that was going on in Kuthuparambu for the last few days. During the camp, the RSS activists got training to use arms and weapons. Soon after the conclusion of the camp, CPI(M) leader Babu was targeted,” he added.
Meanwhile, RSS worker Shanoj was also attacked near New Mahe, and was taken to a hospital nearby, where he later succumbed to injuries. Police, while launching a manhunt for the killers, have embarked upon combing operations in the area to ensure that the situation does not go out of control.
Soon after this, one more CPI(M) worker, Sudheesh, was attacked at Chembra in Mahe. He has sustained the injuries.
The RSS and BJP workers have begun to celebrate the murder the CPI(M) worker, especially on social media platforms. One RSS worker, Sarath, from Kannur took to Facebook to express his cheerfulness over the murder of K Babu. Sarath was asked to remove the post by other RSS workers on the platform. He later deactivated his Facebook account.
To protest this murder, the CPI(M) has called for a shutdown in Kannur and Mahe.
