AFCON and the Politics of the Beautiful Game
The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) concluded on February 6 with Senegal beating Egypt in the final to be crowned champions. The football pitch has seen a lot of exciting action but there have also been questions raised about the conduct of the tournament in Cameroon and the larger politics behind it. New Frame's (South Africa) sports editor, Njabulo Ngidi, talks to Peoples Dispatch about some of these issues, including the fatal stampede at Olembe stadium. He also talks about the outrageous comments by FIFA president Gianni Infantino on the 'benefits' of a biennial World Cup for Africa.
