What Happens If India Stops Exporting COVID-19 Vaccines?
The Indian government is reportedly planning to restrict export of the AstraZeneca vaccine for COVID-19 in order to meet domestic demands. India is currently facing a surge in infections and the government has also expanded the immunisation campaign. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India has exported over 60 million doses of the vaccine, which is produced by the Serum Institute of India. The restrictions will also affect the global Covax initiative that provides doses to poorer countries; Newsclick’s Prabir Purkayastha talks more about the consequences of such a step.
